Preaching
The most important task for lead pastors is the preaching and teaching of God’s Word. The Apostles served as the first pastors of the Jerusalem Church and highlighted the necessity of “preaching the Word of God” and constantly devoting themselves “to the ministry of the Word” (Acts 6:2, 4). The Apostle Paul observed that pastors must be “able to teach” (1 Timothy 3:2) and “be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it” (Titus 1:9). Such teaching should include devotion “to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching” (1 Timothy 4:13). Pastors are “those who labor in preaching and teaching” (5:17). A couple of ways they demonstrate faithfulness to the Lord is by “rightly handling the Word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15) and by constantly being ready to “preach the Word” at any given time (4:2).
