Discipleship
GOBA seeks to encourage and equip churches to carry out the Great Commission mandate to train believers in the Christian faith. The process of discipleship is a lifelong journey that begins by learning about Jesus and what it means to follow Him. It includes developing a Christian worldview, growing in understanding the Scriptures, and helping others grow in the faith.
The Apostle Paul instructed Timothy, “What you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also” (2 Timothy 2:2). Paul told Timothy to disciple others to the point that they, too, could train more. Then, Paul reminded Timothy that Timothy had learned the Christian faith from others, particularly his mother and grandmother, besides the apostle himself (cf. 2 Timothy 3:14-15; 1:5).
We want to help pastors and churches grow as followers of Jesus. We promote the 5D Bible Study method for Christians to learn a simple, proven way to study the Bible and teach others to do the same. We also provide periodic training to encourage others to mentor and disciple other Christians effectively.
While some discipleship can take place in large group settings, it is better to make disciples in small group settings. And the best way is one-on-one discipleship as one trained mentor pours into a mentee willing to learn.
As Baptists love to talk about getting the gospel to more lost people, let’s also not forget to disciple those who come to know the Lord. Both evangelism AND discipleship are foundational to the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20). May we reach more for Jesus and teach them to follow Jesus!
